After 11 years, we managed to travel back to Australia ... of course, we chose two destinations that were completely new to us, therefore, our trip started in the Northern Territory and specifically in Uluru (ex Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta ...
our luck didn´t last long, though, and we got some very unusual wet weather ... that transformed the desert into a swamp and the dry rocks into waterfalls!
After this unexpected cold spell, we were very happy to make our way to tropical Queensland, starting in Port Douglas and Daintree ...
Despite the possibility to meet some crocodiles, we couldn´t resist the urge to jump into the water ...
Next stop - Mission beach ... on the way we tried to see some tree kangaroos to no avail ...
Mission Beach was beautiful, but the cassowaries were definitely hiding in the forest ... at least the wallabies weren´t shy!
On our way to Townsville, we stopped at Tyto Wetlands for a long hike close to the swaps ... some tracks were closed because of the crocodiles ...
The highlight from Townsville were definitely the possums living at the hotel!!
But Townsville is also a gateway to Magnetic Island and our day trip there was magnificent!
On our way to Airlie Beach we stopped at Billabong Sanctuary and we could finally be close and personal with some elusive wildlife...
Airlie Beach was very busy, even a bit too much for our taste ...
... and so were the Whitsundays ... but they were spectacular nonetheless ...
After a quick stop at "historic" Rockhampton, we finally arrived in Agnes Water ...
And then we got to spend three days in K´gari (ex Fraser Island), which is a wonderfully natural place...
We even got to see a Dingo eating a crab on the beach ...
and we took an adventurous flight to see the island from the sky (and the occasional migrating whale in the water ...)
Finally we made our way to Brisbane, our last stop before flying home ... such a beautiful and vibrant city!! I would have gladly spent another couple of days there, just to know a bit more about its breweries!!
After three weeks we can only say: Australia, we love you and we will see you again !!
